Blog Entry #1

In this speech Obama was addressing a group of religious peoples. He was addressing them with the topic of religion in politics. Throughout the speech he brought up many points that he was trying to make to them. He talked about how they wanted to address poverty in the nation. However, he only spoke about poverty briefly. He also brought up personal experiences about how someone he was running against said that Jesus Christ would not vote for him. He stated that his officials told him not to respond to the claim because the man he was running against was a rationalist. He did respond to it though, because he could not let some one tell him about his own religion. He also brought up that people who are not religious think that all people who are want to argue about is abortion, gay marriage, and school prayer. Which he said is a common misleading statement. Obama also talked about how he found his position in religion. He spoke about how his father was born Muslim and later was atheist. He also said that his mother was the most kind and religious person he knew. She had to stay quiet about it though. He said that he was working with some churches in Chicago when they realized that they and him were not so different. He sung the same songs they did and knew the same Book they did. He stated that as months passed in Chicago that he did no longer want to work with the church but be a part of the church. He ended his speech by talking about abortion. He once again shared another story about his life. He talked about a prayer he had prayed the night he said he was pro-choice. How it affected him, and how he thought that he was doing what was best for the country. He wanted everyone to live their own life.
